Overview

NTT Communications, a subsidiary of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, provided a content delivery network (CDN) through its Smart Data Platform, powered by EdgeCast, offering global content delivery for enterprises. The service, launched in 1999, supported various industries with robust network infrastructure until its deprecation in 2025. Following the sale of Edgio’s CDN business, NTT Communications announced the shutdown of its CDN platform, with services ceasing on January 15, 2025. Customers were advised to migrate to Akamai to maintain CDN functionality.

Sunset timeline

  • 1999: NTT Communications founded as part of NTT Group’s reorganization, initially offering internet and network services.
  • 2010s: Expanded into CDN services through a partnership with EdgeCast, later rebranded as Edgio.
  • November 26, 2024: NTT Communications received notice of Edgio’s CDN business sale and network shutdown planned for January 15, 2025.
  • January 15, 2025: NTT Communications’ CDN Platform Powered by EdgeCast officially deprecated, with users required to migrate to Akamai.

Migration guidance

Customers using NTT Communications’ CDN Platform Powered by EdgeCast must migrate by January 15, 2025, to avoid service disruption. Akamai, which acquired Edgio’s customer contracts and assets, is the recommended successor, offering seamless transition support and comparable global CDN capabilities. Alternatives include Cloudflare for developer-centric features or Amazon CloudFront for integration with AWS ecosystems. Contact NTT Communications at cdn-query@ntt.com for migration assistance. History & Notes

NTT Communications leveraged its telecom expertise to deliver CDN services, primarily targeting enterprise clients in Asia and globally. The partnership with EdgeCast enabled features like instant purge and real-time logs, but the service’s reliance on Edgio led to its discontinuation after the 2024 asset sale to Akamai. Some customers may still access archived documentation or support through NTT’s sales channels during the transition period.
